Foundation date of Chopard 

1888

After having lost his mother (1881) and then his father (1888), Karl Scheufele I is placed in an orphanage in Pforzheim. The young Scheufele is 11 years old and already has to face hard realities of life. The bereft child grows up,  keen to share his own social ascension with other.

1890

Karl Scheufele I enters into an apprenticeship program specifically intended to help commercialisation of jewellery pieces created by his peer orphans. Only 20 years old, he undertakes his first commercial trip across Europe and his quick success as a “commercial entrepreneur” makes him[...] understand the importance of each individual contribution for the sake of a common goal. 1945

Heavy bombardments over Pforzheim force the Scheufele family to leave the town by means of railway tunnel, which leads them into a small suburb village. The village reveals being the home place of one of the Scheufele manufacture workers who gives them refuge.

1963

Paul-Andre Chopard and Karl Scheufele III seal the passing deal. Back then, Chopard employs five employees and all of them remain within the company. For the young Karl Scheufele II preserving these employees and their know-how is a must – the legacy continues. 

1975

The new production site in Meyrin has opened its doors. The dream of the dynasty founder is now a reality – not only does Chopard manufacture fine watches and jewellery masterpieces, but also produces its own alloys. 1978

Chopard seeks to increase its vertical integration through its own foundry workshop, the only way to know the exact provenance of the gold used to produce our creations.

1980

The Scheufele family who wishes to perpetuate the watchmaking and jewellery-making professions creates the first apprenticeship school in Meyrin, which will be followed by the one in Pforzheim and finally another one in Fleurier.

1996

Launch year of the José Carreras watch collection. The first limited editions bore engravings of various opera houses around the world on the case-back. This partnership continues through sales of earmarked L.U.C XP watches. 

1999

Partnership with the Prince’s Foundation founded by the Prince of Wales, dedicated to improving the well-being of others.

2000

Caroline Scheufele and Sir Elton John meet at the Cannes Film Festival and discover their shared determination to devote their talent and energy to fight against AIDS. A new corporate philanthropic partnership is born.

2001

Ardent advocates of nature and passionate enthusiasts of the alpine region, Scheufele family supports Alp Action focused on revitalization of the Rohr Natural Reserve, one of the rare valley in Switzerland to have remained in its natural state.

2008

Chopard’ efforts in apprenticeship domain are recognized by the State of Geneva through the “Best Training Company” prize in the category of “Applied Arts”.

2010

À l’aube de son 150e anniversaire, la Maison conclut un partenariat de trois ans avec la « Tigers Alive Initiative » du WWF, un projet de conservation visant à préserver les tigres de l’extinction.

2010

Chopard decides to join forces of its industry pears in promoting responsible business practices and becomes a member of the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC), a non-governmental organization promoting responsible business conduct from mine to the shop window.

2012

The Maison signs the PSA (Protection Suisse des Animaux) declaration renouncing to use any types of exotic leather (galuchat, lizards, pythons, snakes, etc.). Since then, the use of these skins is under complete embargo at Chopard.

The two co-operative mines – one in Bolivia and the other in Colombia - have achieved Fairmined certification following Chopard’s support in the last two years. Chopard has pledged to buy 100% of the Fairmined gold the mines produce.

In light of the escalating Rohingya crisis in Burma, Chopard have taken the decision to cease sourcing Burmese gemstones with immediate effect.

Chopard joins SBGA in order to further increase its contribution in artisanal gold miners’ improvement initiatives and therefore contribute to a further growth of volumes of responsibly extracted gold.
